Hi friends, if you follow me on twitter you must have read my tweet about how I was scared about getting highlights done to my hair since I have never colored my hair before. Well that day I was actually sitting at the Lakme Salon Punjabi Bagh (New Delhi) to try out the 'Show Stopping Hair' experience that Lakme has launched. These are hair styles that you can get done for yourself which are as stylish as hair that you see on the  fashion runways! As they say #HairIsFashion

There are three prominent hair coloring trends being offered:

The Aubern Blend - this is a bold colored look where streaks of red color pop out from your hair.

The Helix Flair - a combination of golden highlights and a bit of color with asymmetrical cuts.

The Pixie Crop - for short haired girls this one has bright hues of brown and orange throwing in the right amount of texture to stylize your hair.

After a consulation with my stylist Mr Suresh I was coaxed into getting the Helix Flair done. Yes I say coaxed because I really wanted to play safe with the Aubern blend - I kept telling him that I only wanted a deep burgundy done in the Aubern blend style. But he explained to me why he was suggesting the Helix Flair. My hair is wavy and jet black. He told me a burgundy color won't show up properly and that getting caramel brown highlights on my black hair would really soften the look and stand out without giving me a drastic appearance change. He spoke to me about my professional profile and understood my apprehension in getting a drastic change done. He also said that burgundy looks better on slightly deeper skin tones and a golden would go well with my skin tone.

See the below picture - this is the Helix Flair - you can understand why I was so skeptical about this - it is drastic as compared to always having lived with black hair!

So, after a lot of discussion and cajoling, I finally gave in and let him do his work. He showed me this entire book of possible hair colors that we could work with and the perfect golden shades for my hair. As they say sometimes its better to leave things in the hand of experts.

First he chose three different shades of color for my hair. Then he started the highlights by sectioning out the hair and picking out the hair in an alternate weave fashion (extremely thin strands of hair were picked out alternately from the section of the hair so that in each section only alternate thinner sections would get the color applied). A foil was used to fasten up each section and then a bit of warm air was applied using the dryer. After about an hour and a warm cup of coffee I was ready for a head wash.

With a nice head massage and hair wash my hair was ready to be cut. Overall I think it took 2.5 hours to finish off everything and when the rest of the staff came and saw the final look it just made my day. I had walked in with my usual black wavy hair and here I was (with never seen before on my hair) streaks of soft caramel gold and hints of red. The stylist gave me the Helix with a dash of red (instead of purple) since I really wanted to try a bit of the Aubern blend :)

At first I was shocked, yes despite everyone going ga-ga over how nice healthy and wonderful my hair looked, I was still skeptical about having hair that now looked brown to me. But the overall color looks very natural. Friends who have noticed have told me they love the new look

I had so much fun getting this makeover done, my stylist Mr. Suresh gave me a protein restoring treatment that made my hair feel so light, smooth and silky straight, almost as if I had got re-bonding done.

The hair is now colored in a manner that I can make it really stand out if I want and yet style it in a very subtle manner for my office.
