Kat Von D Chrysalis Eyeshadow Palette - Review, Photos, Swatches

KatVonD Chrysalis Eyeshadow Palette is a stunner - whether you talk about the packaging or the colors inside.

The dark themed butterfly speaks smokey with a hint of softness.  Its a black cardboard material with a matte finish. Yet it feels nice when you hold it. And mine was quite safe in bubble wrap when it reached me. The palette opens up with a big mirror on one side.

The eyeshadow palette consists of a total of  twelve shades that range from soft beige to purple to deep navy blue. The colors have different finishes making this palette very versatile when you combine different colors.

The larger eyeshadows are highlights and can be used as a base to pop out other colors. These are 2.69 gm. each, while the smaller eyeshadows are 1.4 gm. each.

Kat Von D’s eyeshadow formula is nice and soft. It is easy to blend the colors but some shades do tend to sheer out. One or two colors can be a bit powdery too. With an eyeshadow primer this problem is sorted. The wear time is nice - I got a wear time of about 5 hours on my oily lids without a primer.

Now lets take a closer look at the shades. There are essentially 3 eyeshadow quads in this palette. The first quad consists of the purples.

Lifelike is a pale ivory shade with a matte finish. This is a good matte base for your shadows. I prefer to use it as a matte highlighter as it washes me out if used on its own.

Hybrid Moments is a red toned purple, a wine matte shade. This color is a bit powdery and applies better with a finger than an eyeshadow brush.

Mezzanine has a frosted finish and is a gorgeous pink purple eyeshadow. It has a smooth texture with good pigmentation.

Transition looks like a pearly mauve in the box but on my skin it appears quite silvery with a hint of mauve. The metallic sheen is nicely pronounced and the texture is smooth. This is again a good shade that can be used as a base for other colors to make them pop.

The next eyeshadow quad is more on the neutral side with muted browns and grays.

Lunar Lights is frosted grey shade with a pearl sheen. Again a soft smooth texture which makes it easy to blend on the eyes.

Glasswing is a beautiful caramel matte eyeshadow. It is a yellow brown shade that is just a tad darker than my skin tone. This is not powdery and hence my go to shade for blending other colors when I am not using it on its own.

Melancholia a pewter gold shade with a toned down metallic finish. This eyeshadow also applies quite well with a finger rather than a brush. Using a brush makes it appear more powdery while a good finish is achieved with a finger.

Black Milk a cool toned matte gray eyeshadow with a soft texture. For my skin tone this is a shade I'd use to blend pop colors to tone them down. On its own it makes me look ashy.

The 3rd eyeshadow quad in Kat Von D Chrysalis palette is your perfect companion for smokey eyes.

Lucid is a soft pale pink with a hint of white sparkle. Slightly chalky in texture it is a good highlight shade. Through the day it can lose a bit of the sparkle and appear just plain pink. I still like this shade to add just a hint of sheen.

Graphic Nature is a charcoal gray with a satin finish. The texture is powdery so you need to dab it on gently or best use an eyeshadow primer. A dark shadow fallout can make your eyes look rather racoon like.

Entombed is dark navy blue color with a pearl finish. This is one of my favourite shades and works really well when paired with Hybrid Moments. The texture is smooth but you do get a better finish if you apply this with your fingers or pat it on.

Tourney looks really black but has a hint of blue. It has a matte finish with a good color payoff. This shade when used with a touch of clear liner, would lovely as a liner on the eyes.

Overall I am quite happy with the Kat Von D Chrysalis Eyeshadow palette. Kat Von D makeup is something I've tried for the first time and quite enjoyed it. I hope to try out some of their lipsticks as well. These are available on a lot of wholesale makeup websites for a fraction of the price. But before you make your purchase do check the expiry dates and authenticity of the product.

Have you used any of their palettes?
