Happy Dussehra!

For those of you who are not aware of Dussehra, a small introduction to this day celebrated by Indians with a lot of happiness. Dussehra is the day when Lord Rama killed a deamon king called Ravana who at that point ruled over Sri Lanka. Ravana is said to have 10 heads, basically signifying that he had the intelligence of 10 people yet he was killed because of his bad deeds.

To celebrate this day an effigy of Ravana and his two brothers is put up in different areas and burnt while onlookers watch it and thank Lord Rama.

Cow Dung Cakes Being Worshipped
At my in-laws there is a special ritual done in the morning to pray to Ravana, to receive his intelligence. Cow dung cakes are prepared (10 representing his 10 heads) and are worshipped with offerings of curd, barley stalks, and powdered sugar.
A book is kept where the current price of basic things such as sugar, rice etc is noted down each year. This ritual is followed by a lot of business families. It is interesting to see the old book kept at my husband's place as it is a true reflection of the inflation that has happened over all these years :)

Do you have any special way of celebrating Dussehra? And if you are not Indian is there any such ritual followed during your religious celebrations? It would be interesting to know if different cultures actually connect somewhere at the root level!

Happy Dussehra, may good always win over evil and may the Ravanas of our lives be eliminated for ever!
