Yesterday at an event hosted by Wella International Studio I got to interact with Maria Castan, a senior scientist with Proctor & Gamble, Germany.

Here are some facts that will help you all decide if you want to get your hair colored.

1. Ammonia free hair colors usually contain MEA(Monoethanolamine) - a product that is needed in a higher concentration to provide the color coverage that only a small amount of ammonia can. And MEA does not evaporate like ammonia does - the result - more damage to your hair in the long term even if you are seeing better short term benefits like no smell during coloring.

2. Hair coloring is safe during pregnancy - make sure you read the package properly - it will state 'do not use if pregnant' if it is not suitable for use during pregnancy. But, if your heart tells you to avoid hair coloring - don't do it - otherwise psychologically you will be scared about the impact and that will do you more harm than you can think of!

3. Always get hair coloring done by a professional - taking short cuts can lead to damage in the long term because the right percentage of ingredients really makes a big difference.

4. A small population of people are allergic to the dye used in hair color. This allergy has nothing to do with ammonia or hydrogen peroxide. So if in the past you have had an allergic reaction to a hair color, get a full allergy test done to narrow down the chemical product that is causing you allergy.

And no matter how you color your hair, remember to follow up with a lot of love for your hair. Condition them well, get them trimmed regularly and stay happy with happy tresses!
