New Delhi, 15thNovember 2013: Hindustan Tin Works Limited, the leading Can manufacturing company in India along with Pearl Academy, India’s leading design, fashion and art institute, celebrated their much anticipated ‘The Spirit of Sustainability’ fashion show event for the Canvironment Week in New Delhi. The fashion show witnessed students of Pearl Academy walking the ramp and showcasing their innovative and beautiful designs created out of tin cans and metal scrap.
The Spirit of Sustainability fashion show took place with the aim of promoting sustainability of metal cans being modern, trendy, 100% recyclable and environment friendly. The fashion show is part of the global Canvironment campaign, the ambitious project of Hindustan Tin Works Limited where they directly speak to the consumers and spread the awareness of metal packaging.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Atit Bhatia, President of Canvironment Week & Senior Vice President of Hindustan Tin Works Limited said, “Fashion has a direct connect with the youth and hence the right delivery vehicle for us to use and involve the youngsters in a sustainability campaign. We are thrilled to see the outcome and congratulate the students and professors for an excellent demonstration of creativity, talent and passion in a challenging task by presenting some very glamorous garments made from tins and scrap”
Highlighting the vitality of youth participation and sensitivity towards environment issues, Mr. Sharad Mehra, CEO, Pearl Academy, said, “It is extremely important for our youth to understand the concept of environment sustainability and develop sensitivity towards the same. The 'Canvironment Week’ is indeed an encouraging and engaging platform for our students where they use metal scrap and tin cans to make innovative garments. This experience will also help students devise and implement sustainable businesses in future for a greener earth. We are glad that Pearl Academy has been associated with HTW for such a meaningful initiative since last two years. We witnessed stupendous creations last year and awe inspiring creativity today as a result of our association."
Ms. Sanyogeitaa Chadha, HoD – Fashion Design Department, Pearl Academy, was also elated with students’ work and said, “I am proud to see pure enthusiasm in our students towards the whole concept of environmental sustainability. Their work is speaking through their creations and it is sheer innovation. I must say that CAN can look glamorous!”
The excitement could be easily seen on the faces of the students. The dresses were prepared by the graduate students for whom this was learning as well as a fun filled experience.
The event started with a welcome speech by Mr. Sanjay Bhatia followed by a fashion show began with Pearlites sway down the ramp wearing beautiful garments made from scrap tins and cans. The evening came to an end with the prize distribution ceremony. At the event, 32 designs were displayed by the fashion students and the best three designs were awarded with the prize money of Rs 15,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5, 000 respectively.
The jury consisted of Ellen Wauters, Manager Communications & National Associations Coordinator, EMPAC Brussels , Megan Daum – VP Sustainability Can Manufacturers Institute, USA , John Revess – Group Environment Affairs Director, United Kingdom, Antonio Teixeira, President – International Packaging Association , Brazil and Mr Darshan Chandrekar, faculty of Pearl Academy.
About Canvironment Week 2013
A unique worldwide initiative, Canvironment week aims at not just educating but taking action as well. After the success of the first Canvironment Week, Can makers and Brand owners across the world were again together to create a ‘United Global Metal Can Sustainability Movement.’
Its aim is to make a noteworthy and sustainable impact by creating an all round awareness about the exclusive benefits of usage of Cans, the vital one being its eco-friendly nature.
The whole event revolves around passion and perseverance to mobilize the cause, ‘Save our Planet’. By building a strong and united Global force, which will lay the foundation to create an Environment, which is Canvironment friendly.
A major effort to support the Global recycling system and the long-term sustainability of the metal cans are the key features of this initiative.
