Raksha Bandhan Nail Art - 3D Rakhi Nails Tutorial

Hi friends, this is another nail art post specially for Raksha Bandhan. Rakshan Bandhan is a Hindu festival that celebrates the love between brothers and sisters. On this day sisters tie a thread of love and good luck on their brother's wrist. This thread is called the Rakhi. The brother in turn vows to protect his sister. There is a lot of historical significance to this festival (you can read it on wiki-pedia)

The ordinary thread over time has changed many forms - from crystals, to the now popular diamond studded Rakhis - the humble holi thread has had a makeover.

To capture the festivity of this day I tried to recreate a tiny little Rakhi for my nails. I know this might sound a bit crazy but then who wants to be normal! The pictures were all taken when all of my nails were still wet - you can see the wet polish around the accent nail with Rakhi.

Things you need:

1. Tiny embelishments for creating the Rakhi - I used green nail studs and one flower crystal stud.

2. A thin thread - I used a golden thread from a ribbon I had - you can use a normal thread and coat it with golden polish

3. Clear top coat

4. Zip lock bag (or any similar plastic bag)

To make the Rakhi take the clear polish and paint 4 thick layers of polish in a square shape on the plastic bag. Let this dry for around 2 hours (or more if the weather is humid). Once dry gently lift it off the plastic. (This technique is a DIY nail decal technique - see the first picture in the collage below)

Once it is absolutely dry place the nail art studs - apply a drop of clear polish on the back of the stud and place it on the clear strip you created. Arrange the studs in any manner you wish - I placed the flower in the middle and arranged the green studs like leaves around the flower. Now let this dry (you should wait for about half an hour atleast). The picture in the middle shows the way I placed my studs.

Once this dries up and you are able to lift the strip without breaking it, turn it over and now using the clear polish as glue, stick the thread on the back side of the embellished strip of clear polish. See the last image in the collage above.

Your rakhi is done.

For the remaining nails I painted using Maybelline ColorShow Bold Gold and stamped using Maybelline ColorShow Feisty Fuschia. On the accent nail I painted with Feisty Fuschia - once it dried I painted it with clear polish and placed the rakhi on the wet nail.
