Maxi dresses spell comfort and suit mostly all body types. But if not styled correctly maxi dresses can look as if you are wearing a nightgown! Here are the 5 key tips on how to style a maxi-dress focusing on your body shape.

5 Ways To Style A Maxi Dress (For Different Body Shapes) |
1. Cinch that waist
Best suited if you have a straight body (or with weight around your tummy!) a belt adds shape. Make sure the belt is about 2-3 inches wide so that it can clearly give a 'break' in the straight shape of the maxi dress. I wore a tan belt over a Rachel Red Maxi dress. If you are lean then add shape to your waist by wearing an empire line.

2. Team it with a crop jacket
Best suited for small busted women - a crop jacket adds volume to your upper half. If you have really thin arms then a denim crop jacket will balance out the look of a maxi dress.
Crop jackets can also be worn over maxi dresses by top heavy women if the maxi dress is strapless. This cuts the heaviness on the top. If you are top heavy and also short in height then make sure the jacket sits around your waist and is not too short. A shorter jacket will only draw attention to your bust area.
3. Play with the neckline of the maxi dress
If you are short and petite go for square-necks and strappy shoulders. If you have broad shoulders a V-neckline will cut the broadness. To flaunt those shoulders a racer back neckline will look great on slender framed girls. If you are heavy on the top a deeper V-neck will give you the right proportion.

4. Footwear to wear with a maxi dress
If you have the height, maxi dresses look best with flats. But if you are short add about 2-3 inches of heels to elongate your look. Unless you are absolutely comfortable in stilettos give them a miss. Maxi dresses are flowy and you can trip over if you are not careful with stilettos.
5. Printed or solid colors
For any formal occasion solids are the safest bet. Tall women can play around with any kinds of print. Short or heavy women should opt for smaller prints or solid bold colors. Wearing a single coloured dress will add height. Vertical prints will also help elongate your frame.
