5 Tips On How To Wear A Double-Breasted Trench Coat

Trench coats were originally created to shield off the rain in colder climates. Traditionally a trench coat used to be made of thick gabardine cotton with a separate inner lining. The sleeves would be raglan sleeves and the length varied from above the knee to the longer varieties that would end just below the ankle.

Trench coats today are more of a fashion statement. While they keep you warm they look extremely stylish. This winter I saw an outburst of double-breasted trench coats that end mid-thigh or just above the knee. Last year I wore a short trench coat to the Ayesha accessories event (click here to see pictures) and this year I decided to add another trench coat to my wardrobe. (not wearing any makeup in the pics and my hair is just tied up loosely as it was still wet when I headed out to the market)

5 Tips On How To Wear A Double-Breasted Trench Coat

  1. When wearing a double breasted trench coat remember to keep the buttons closed. The double panel of the coat looks horrible if left undone. Only if you are extremely skinny you can let the panels loose to add a little bulk to your silhouette. Close all the buttons properly and secure the belt if the coat has one. Most coats that come with a belt look awesome when the belt is tied because it cinches your waist and gives you a nice fit. In case you have a single breasted trench coat you can keep it open as it looks stylish but double panelled coats look overly bulky so avoid it.

  2. If your trench is a single solid colour you can play it up with any other compatible shade, for instance a beige trench coat with look lovely with denims or coloured trousers. Similarly a red trench coat would look great with black pants. You can also go monochromatic and play with the textures, wear a skirt in a colour similar to the colour of your trench coat.
