Indigo As A Natural Hair Colorant - No More Orange Henna Dyed Hair

A lot of people dye their hair when it starts to lose its color. But a large number of people are allergic to the ingredients that even the best of brands add to their hair color and dye products. People who are allergic to hair colors then resort to using natural coloring such as Henna. Henna is very good in terms of coloring your hair naturally but the big downside is that the color imparted is orange and at the best a light brown if you have fortified it with coffee and other natural ingredients.

Indigo As A Natural Hair Dye

In order to solve these issues comes another natural product called Indigo. Indigo powder is actually a blue dye extracted from plant sources. It imparts a deep blue/black color on its own but when mixed with henna it gives a very natural deep brownish black color to the hair.

Indigo powder is available online and comes in packets of various sizes.

How To Use Indigo Powder

Indigo powder can be used in two ways. You can either apply it as a standalone paste (after your Henna application) OR you can mix it with your henna and apply. You need about 2 heaped tablespoons of this powder (for medium length hair)

When used alone the color imparted will be blacker but staying power will be less. Henna helps the color to bind better so you can mix with Henna for a browner color and increase the quantity of Indigo based on how deep you need the brown to be.

As a powder Indigo looks exactly like Henna.

When mixed with water it dissolves just like Henna as well.

You can apply the Indigo paste on you hair for about 2 hours and then wash off with plain water. You will be left with all your gray strands covered beautifully in a dark brown hue which will look very natural.

    1. Hi Rajalakshmi
Indigo alone will not give a brown sheen to black hair, if you want to add a brown sheen to otherwise black hair simply use henna and leave it on for about 1.5 hours. Since henna itself gives an orange color, if used on top of black hair it will leave a brownish sheen.

Indigo is for covering grays :)

      Hope that helps!

  2. Eventually, hairs will have hard time to go back to its original smoothness and thickness. If you have not tried hair dye yet, better not attempt to do so.
