How To Wax Your Upper Lips at Home

A lot of girls have upper lip hair and need to regularly go to the parlour to thread it away. Although there are many techniques available for hair removal, threading is the quickest. But it has to be done bi-monthly at least. And sometimes we just don’t have the time for a visit to the parlour and are left wondering if we could do something at home. Threading at home is also possible but takes a long time when compared to the time taken by a professional at the parlour.

So what then do I have to offer in this post? Well, its nothing other than an alternative to threading – that is waxing. Yes waxing the upper lip at your convenience in the comfort of your home. Waxing also has the advantage that hair grows out slower so you don’t have to repeat it every two weeks.

The product that I use for at home waxing is not your regular hot/cold wax that is available but rather something also known as ‘katori wax’. Sleek Wax Pack is a product that you can use for removing hair from your face at home very easily.

Product
The wax comes packed in a metallic bowl that is inside a cardboard box. You can see the outer box in the photo above.

The wax is called ‘katori wax’ because in Hindi a small metal bowl is called ‘katori’. The wax itself is set in this metal box, it is dark orange in colour. One drawback with this product is that there is no applicator with the wax.

My wax is all deformed due to reheating but the original one comes nicely set.

The Process
The process of facial hair removal using the wax is very simple.

Step 1: The first step is to heat the wax so that it melts. The easiest way of melting it is placing the metal bowl directly over a flame. But this can be tricky as the metal bowl itself will heat up very very quickly. An alternative is to take a bowl of warm water and hold the wax bowl over this water (making sure you don’t dip the bowl into the water).
Sleek Wax Pack - Facial Hair Remover Step 1 - heat the wax

I take a pair of tongs to hold the metal bowl and directly heat it over a flame.

Step 2: The next step is to let the wax cool down to a temperature bearable by you and then apply it over the area that needs to be waxed. For this take a spatula or a flat surfaced stick made of either metal or plastic (I use the small white ones that come with face bleach packs). Dip this into the wax taking out a small amount. Touch this with your fingers to make sure it is not too hot.
Sleek Wax Pack - Facial Hair Remover Step 2: Taking Wax With Spatula
Sleek Wax Pack - Facial Hair Remover - Step 2
Step 3: Now apply this on your upper lip going either top to bottom OR from center outwards. You need to apply it in the direction of hair growth.

Step 4: Wait for a couple of seconds and repeat the above step but this time in reverse direction (against the direction of hair growth). Make sure each time you apply only a very thin film of the wax and not a gooey lump of it.

Step 5: Once again repeat the step but in the direction followed in Step 1
Sleek Wax Pack - Facial Hair Remover Step 3-4-5: Wax applied on area
Sleek Wax Pack - Facial Hair Remover
Here I have applied the wax on my hand so that I can take proper photos to show you how it looks like when spread out.

Step 5: Now pat the area with your fingers until the wax has completely hardened. You will feel your skin is tightening under the wax which is normal.

Step 6: Now time for some hair plucking action. Holding your skin taught with one hand, use the other hand to gently ROLL the wax off in the reverse direction in which you applied it (that is against the direction of hair growth).
Step 6: Roll off the wax against direction of hair growth
Sleek Wax Pack - Facial Hair Remover - Step 6 - Roll off the wax
Slowly as you lift up the wax you will have your hair gone!

Below are some more photos showing you the wax as it is being removed.

This might be tricky at first or may even hurt a little (specially if hair is closer to the nose or lip line) But once you get used to doing this it will become easier and less painful. If you regularly get threading done on your lips you will find this is much faster and gives a very clean upper lip. The trick is to roll the wax off quickly (as if you are almost pulling it away).

  5. nicely reviewed and useful post... but, when you pat the wax with ur finger after application, does it not stick to ur finger??? also, can we use this on sides of the face? since the wax is (though tolerably) hot, would it be good to use this on other parts of face?? i think i have asked enuff questions, sorry.... :)

    1. thanks Jennifer.
Let me answer all your questions one by one
      1) No, when you pat it with your finger it won't stick - patting makes the wax dry faster making it ready for the next coat. It also smoothens it out a bit so that rolling it off is more smoother.
      2) Yes you can use it on the sides of the face.
      3) I have tried this for waxing my eyebrows as well and it works just fine - so its good for the entire face - just make sure the application is done very carefully. The eyebrows are the trickiest and must be tried only when you are very comfortable in using this (and apply the wax with a very narrow ended rounded flat applicator - I used the handle of an old spoon made of steel)
I hope I have answered your questions. And don't worry dear, I love to hear from people and am more than glad to answer your queries.

    1. Thanks Angel, yes it does remove all of the hair, its almost like facial strips - the diff is that facial strips are pre-waxed strips while this one is more a do-it-yourself kinds. I haven't tried facial strips because in general I think waxing strips are great on the go and I usually use them for the arms and legs.

    1. Hi Sarita
If your skin is extremely sensitive this might not work for you. Usually small bumps are formed on the skin after waxing - but these go away on their own or after application of some ice.
Since this wax is quite cheap I would suggest you try it out. But, instead of directly applying it to the face do a small patch test on your arm. This will a) get you familiar with the whole process, and b) let you know if this gives you any irritation.
And when you do venture off on your face, make sure your face is absolutely clean and dry and after taking the wax off apply ice to the area. Remember this wax is not to be pulled off like regular wax, you can gently roll it off so it might be gentler on the skin than normal wax.
      Hope this helps!
