How To Organize Your Closet

Yes friends I have been missing in action for the past couple of days. Instead of doing product reviews I've been spending time trying to wrap up winters and usher in the summers. And here is a look into how I decided to do this.

Well for starters I had to clean up my wardrobe. It was stocked with all woolens and the summer dresses were dying to come out. So this is how I spent my weekend.

This is how my wardrobe looked before - yes I know its just overflowing in all places and is pretty messed up!

After going through a laborious 3 hours of cleaning, sorting organizing, here I present my much neater and organized summer wardrobe.... TADA!!!!

There are 3 drawers that you see that still need organizing - they contain smaller nick knacks which means at least 1 more hour of sorting - that I have postponed for sometime later! Phew!

And now here is my little 'How To' for you if you are also planning to organize your wardrobe.

How To Organize Your Wardrobe

1. Take out everything from the wardrobe - every small little thing needs to come out.

2. Now take a cleaning liquid, a soft cloth and some water - scrub every nook and cranny to remove all traces of dirt. Once clean let the wardrobe breath to dryness. And in the meantime you will have enough to keep you busy because you will proceed to step 3!

3. Sort out all your clothes into 3 categories -

  • Category A: you love and wear the most
  • Category B: you love but have never worn
  • Category C: you don't love anymore
4. For category A and C its easy - you need to keep A and get rid of C - make sure you give your old clothes to some need person - check out different charity collection centers in your area and do some good. What you don't need anymore can be some one else treasure!

5. For category A - go through these again and see if anything is worn out enough that you can part with it now. Add this to category C as well.

6. Now for the hard part - category B - clothes that you love but have never worn - well we all have those favorite impulse buys, pieces we really love and hope to wear some day - if you have not worn them for one entire year - please let go of it - you are probably not going to wear this ever! If your love is too strong then keep it out of your wardrobe and store it someplace else (and you know if there is no 'somewhere' else for storage then you are simply wasting your wardrobe space holding onto this piece) - give it up, add it to category C. You will definitely earn a smile on someone's face. It will be totally worth it!

7. Once your clothes are sorted repeat the same with other things - your socks, hand bags, belts, scarves, makeup - now is the time to inpsect everything that you have in your wardrobe (I skipped sorting of my makeup and hair accessories as that is going to be another 1 hour which needs special attention!)

8. Once you have your category A (in clothes, bags, accessories) all sorted out arange your items by
  • size (smaller sized shirts go together, short skirts in one pile, longer skirts in another)
  • color (among the small sized shirts sort further in terms of color and do the same for other stacks created while sorting on size)
Now you may wonder why go through the pain of step 8 - well trust me on this one. There are 2 major reasons for doing this
A) It keeps the wardrobe well organized so that things don't topple over one another
B) It saves time when you are hunting for something and the bonus is a good looking wardrobe!

Once you are done with step 8 its time to put everything back in your wardrobe. Overall the final result is satisfying to the extent of making you feel relaxed. And well it will be hardwork keeping the wardrobe looking so neat going forward because when you are in a hurry you may tend to pull out something without noticing two other things you toppled over but once you have this structure in place you won't need to touch-up the structure for at least a month - that is my experience!

Apart from this I also started reading The Secret Of The Nagas - am totally loving the Shiva Trilogy!

And well I also was busy with a DIY but that is for another post another time!

Do share your own wardrobe organizing secrets and tips and tricks that can help us all stay better organized!
