What's In Your Beauty Bag

This post is part of a fun contest by Healthkart where I've been tagged to post about #WhatsInYourBeautyBag. So I thought why not go ahead and show you what I cannot do without and always carry with me specially during summers.

Whats In Your Beauty Bag

Now this is not a regular Whats In Your Beauty Bag post. The challenge here is to pick 5 products which cost a total of Rs 1500 - so I have to make sure I don't exceed the given budget. This again is interesting because a lot of times we are not sure what we should buy when we are on a tight budget.

I hope my list helps you in choosing some good must have products without burning a whole in your wallet (You can click the name of the product to go to the website for purchasing)

1. Votre Toner, Pore Shrink
A good toner gives a nice clean base to your skin. I also use this after washing my face to ensure all my makeup is gone and my skin feels fresh.

Bridal Lipstick - Lotus Herbals Moistpetals Raspberry Punch 122 - Review and Swatches

I purchased the Lotus Herbals Moist Petals lipstick long back but never got down to reviewing it. And it has been a long time since I did a lipstick review post so here I am.

Lotus Herbals Moist Petals Lipstick - Raspberry Punch - 122

The Lotus Herbals Moist Petals lipsticks come in a maroon colored cardboard box which has the ingredients and price mentioned on the pack. It has a circle cut out on the base so that you can read the name of the lipstick shade that sits inside the box. I don't have the pack for mine so no pictures.

The lipstick itself comes in a metallic red and gold packaging which a lot of bloggers have called 'cheap looking' but I don't find this cheap looking at all. Just my take. Its not of a bad quality and I actually like the gold and red combo.

What the company says: "100% vegetarian, Moistpetals is a range of premium quality lip colours, available in 20 attractive shades. This range not only gives your lips a natural colour, but also hydrates, nourishes and protects them for long hours."

Soft Pink Smokey Eyes Simple Tutorial and First FOTD

I finally after almost a year of blogging decided to share a full face - so this is my first ever FOTD, hope you all like it.

Pink Soft Smokey Eyes FOTD with Lotus Herbals MoistPetal Lipstick in Raspberry Punch
The challenge was to use minimum makeup so I did this using only 4 products that I will reveal as I present the steps.

I chose a soft pink smokey eye look - the face is bare without makeup (freshly washed) and on my lips I am wearing Raspberry Punch from Lotus Herbals Moistpetals range which I will be reviewing soon. (Yeah made use of the buy 1 get 1 free offer on HERE)

Now for the soft pink smokey eyes or do I say pink soft smokey eyes? Here are the steps in a picture (followed by text below)

Step 1: Start with clean eyes (if they are dry moisturize them with a non greasy eye cream - or use aloe vera - mine are bare)

Step 2: Use any pink eye shadow, I chose a coral pink which is actually a blush - the Bourjois Little Pot Blush in Rose Eclat (reviewed HERE) and cover the entire lid - add more colour on the lid and just one gentle swipe on the brow bone. If your pink is darker then skip the brow bone area. You can do this step using your finger, the brush present in the blush or use an eye shadow brush. I did mine using an eye shadow brush from E.L.F.

Step 3. Using a black eye liner (or kajal pencil) draw a thick line on on outer corner of the upper eye lid tapering it off as you go near the inner corner of the eye. I have used Maybelline Colossal Kajal (reviewed HERE)

Step 4. Using the same liner tightline your eyes (as shown in the image)

Step 5. Using the eye shadow brush smudge the black line starting from the outer corner moving towards the inner corner. When you smudging the outer corner smudge into the crease (only on the outer corner)

Step 6. Repeat step 3 but draw a thinner line than before and take it all the way towards the inner corner of the eye.

That is it. And here is a round up of all the products used on my face in the FOTD
1. Bourjois Paris Blush - Rose Eclat (used on my cheeks and eyes)
2. Maybelline Colossal Kajal (used as liner)
3. Eye Shadow brush (E.L.F.)
4. Lotus Herbals Moistpetals Lipstick - Raspberry Punch

So friends, what do you think about my FOTD and this tutorial? Do leave your comments - if you like it I will try and do more FOTDs in future!

Lotus Herbals Pure Color Lipstick - Rose Wood - Review

Soft lips with a natural rose brown color - exactly what I needed. I am too shy to don a bright red or coral on my lips. Even darker shades make me feel a bit uncomfortable unless its a wedding that I need to attend. So I keep hunting for soft natural looking colors, something to give my face a gentle lift without making me too concious of what I have on my lips. I found one such shade in the Lotus Herbals Pure Color lipsticks range - Rose Wood (641)

Lotus Herbals Pure Color Lipstick - Rose Wood - 641

What the company claims
"PURE COLOR™ is a 100% vegetarian range of moisturizing lip colours available in 22 rich, sophisticated shades including peaches, pinks and nutty browns. Enriched with the botanical extracts of Aloe Vera and Jojoba."

Product
Lotus Herbals Pure Color Lipsticks come in a shimmery beige packing with Lotus Herbals logo in gold. The lipsticks are smooth and creamy in texture and have a decent staying power.

Octopus nail art - tutorial

A friend on style craze did this really cute animal nail art with a hippo - I was inspired and thought of giving something in the animal theme a try. After a lot of thought I decided to try an octopus. I wanted to make mine really cute but well, ahmm... this is how it turned out

nail art - octopus

Here are step by step pictures - please ignore the horrible control on the brush - ya I tried doing this with a painting brush - which I realized is wonderful for paints but not for polishes! Keep reading because I do have a picture tutorial - and I'm sure those of you who are more practised with nail art can do a great job on this same little octopus!

Octopus Nail Art - Nail Polishes used
Step 1: I took a paint pallet and mixed the Lotus white nail paint with NYC blue nail paint to create a light blue (for the ocean) colour - and then sponged it on using the same technique I used for step 1 of sponging-nail-art-soft-pink-tutorial
Octopus Nail Art - Step 1
Step 2: I used the Sally Hansen Salon nail paint and drew round circles in the middle of the nails using a 0 number paint brush (round nail art tools can be used for a smoother circle)

Step 3: Next I took a toothpick - broke its tip and used it to draw the wavy legs of the Octopus
Octupus Nail Art - step 3

Step 4 and Step 5 - I took the Sally Hansen Diamond Strength to add two dots for the eyes and then the white nail paint to draw the smile

And finally the tutorial on how to do it yourself:

Lotus Herbals Frujuvenate Fruit Pack - review

Come summers and the skin really begs for a relaxing session of scrubbing followed by a nice pack. If the pack smells nice then all the better.

Although I am an ardent user of the Himalaya Herbals Neem Face Pack I recently tried the Lotus Herbals Frujuvenate - Skin Perfecting and Rejuvenating Fruit pack. It claims to have natural Alpha-Hydroxy fruit acids that act on stressed skin to give it a new vitality and healthy radiance. It says it is specially beneficial for mature skin and is pH balanced.

The pack comes in a ready to use tube form - and I like how the Lotus products give an estimated time that the product takes to act on your skin. This pack has a time shown on 20 minutes (look towards the bottom of the tube)

The tube has a flip cap. The pack itself is skin toned shade. It is thick in consistency but spreads easily. In order to use the pack you just clean your face, pat dry and apply the pack evenly all over the face (avoid eye area). Now sit back and enjoy. The light fruity fragrance of the pack is nice - I don't find it overpowering but some may not like it.

The pack dries up in roughly 15 minutes but I keep it on longer - almost 20 minutes if not more. Then wash it off gently with water.

The face feels so fresh and bright. I do not notice any drastic changes to my skin but it does feel brighter. The brightness is not long lasting though.

My mom also tried this pack and liked it. Ready to use packs are always nice - no mess mixing powders.

Overall nothing spectacular but if you are thinking of trying a new pack (and have no acne issues) then do give this a try.

Lotus Herbals AlphaMoist – alpha hydroxy oil-free moisturizer - review

I have a combination skin type and usually moisturizers leave my face feeling like an oil factory after a couple of hours of application.
So in search for a good moisturizer I googled and found good reviews about  the Lotus Herbals AlphaMoist – alpha hydroxyl oil-free moisturizer
Lotus Herbals AlphaMoist – alpha hydroxyl oil-free moisturizer

The moisturizer comes in a light yellow plastic bottle with a pump dispenser. This makes the bottle very easy to carry around and use.

The directions for using this are simple - apply over a cleansed face and neck. The texture of this moisturizer is thick but not too creamy. It is just right for the pump dispenser to give you good control over the amount you need.

The moisturizer is light weight on application. It has a slightly medicated smell which goes  away after application. If you have used any salicylic acid or glycolic acid products you would find the smell familiar.

AlphaMoist contains alpha hydroxy acids in the form of plant extracts and a lot of other good ingredients. The company claims that this moisturizer provides a smooth complexion and reveals fresh newer skin.

But I see a lot of parabens mentioned on the back label which cannot be good. (You can click on the image to enlarge it)
Anyhow after all the high hopes from reviews I had read I decided to give it a try. I won’t say I hate it but I can’t say I love it either. It doesn’t make my skin oily which is good but I think it breaks me out. Not like big pimples or anything but it causes little bumps to appear on my face here and there. I notice this happens only when I use it during the day. If I apply it at night my face is quite oily in the morning but does not have any break outs.
Nothing spectacular happened to my skin after using it – so for me this is a total miss. I will finish up the current bottle that I have (applying it more to my neck than my face) but I won’t repurchase it.
I guess if you are looking for a light weight moisturiser and haven’t had major break out issues you can give this a try. Below are pics of how the moisturiser looks (this is 1 pump) and how my hand looks after I've rubbed it in.

Details at a glance
Packaging      : plastic bottle with a pump cap
Texture            : lightweight
Fragrance      : medicated
Price              :Rs 195 (but you can get it at discounted price online)

What I like:
·         Light weight texture
·         Added benefits of alpha hydroxy acids

What I dont like:
·        Gives me small bumps on my skin
